Lando Norris bagged a second pole position of the season but to do it had to go faster than any car ever has before around the Circuit de Monaco. Charles Leclerc was despondent to end up on the wrong side of the front row, but crucially edged-out championship-leader Oscar Piastri.

After victory in Imola, Max Verstappen’s P5 – upgraded to P4 after a penalty for Lewis Hamilton – feels fairly humdrum, though infinitely better than that of the Mercedes pair who line-up P14 and P15 respectively after the sort of Qualifying session they’ll be keen to forget.
